The
painting which millions of tourists come to admire year after year at the
Louvre has nothing left in common with Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece.
Since the painting was originally created between 1503 and 1506, i.e. more
than five hundred years ago, the varnish cover has turned yellow, making it
look significantly darker. The painting looks as if it has been painted in
brown and greenish shades, while the Italian master’s contemporaries
used to praise its strong, delicate colors...

The
French engineer Pascal Cotte, who invented the process, took pictures of the
painting within the scope of a study in 2004.
His study has enabled him to restore the Monna Lisa’s maiden complexion...
